New Providence, one of the boroughs in Union County, is located on the Passaic River on the border of Morris County. On the north side of New Providence is Chatham Township and on the west and south are Passaic River Berkeley Heights and on the east side is Summit. A major part of Murray Hill lies in New Providence.

Close to ten percent of the land in New Providence is permanently protected and set aside for park land. Part of the riverfront parkland is owned by Union County and the rest is owned by New Providence.

New Providence Borough does not allow bars or selling of liqueur in restaurants, so it is a dry-town; however, restaurant goers are allowed to bring their own liquor. Local administration announced in 2011 that it was considering issuing liquor licenses, which, if allowed, could bring in millions in revenue for the borough.

Schools in New Providence district are Allen W. Roberts Elementary School, Salt Brook Elementary School, New Providence Middle School and New Providence High School.

The borough School District serves students in pre-K through 12th grade with high school and middle school sharing some of the facilities, such as auditorium, art room and gyms.

The Academy of Our Lady of Peace operates under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark and serves students in pre-kindergarten through 8th grade.

The shopping center is located in downtown Providence where property is valuable, especially due to the high number of affluent neighborhoods such as Gillette, Stirling, Bernards Twp, Millington and Long Hill.

Corporate headquarters based in Providence include Panasonic Electric Works, Baxter Pharmaceutical, Alcatel Lucent Technologies and Lexis Nexis.
